Around the turn of the last century as Bellingham was expanding northward, a newly cleared and gently sloping area was being developed for a residential neighborhood. Unlike the rest of Bellingham at that time, there were no hills or ridges and the newly cleared tract had no towering trees to block out the sun, so the name Sunnyland seemed fitting. Most of the Sunnyland Neighborhood was built before 1930 and consists of mainly small to middle size homes on typical city sized lots.

Many of these original homes are what you find in the Sunnyland Neighborhood today with many of them owner occupied and some rentals. Most of the neighborhood consists of quiet neighborhood streets with many opportunities for first time home buyers to find an affordable and well located home. Many of the children living in the Sunnyland neighborhood live within walking distance of their schools and parks.

Those who live in Sunnyland enjoy being a quick bike ride from downtown or a quick walk to the grocery store and a variety of businesses and restaurants right in the neighborhood. Trader Joe's is a convenient walk from anywhere in the neighborhood and has almost all your grocery needs with unique health and organic products. There are also several family restaurants and cafes that are located in the neighborhood close by. Avenue Bread sells fresh baked artisan bread and also has a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch. Coconut Kenny's has great pizza and Lee's Drive In has been a cornerstone in the neighborhood for generations.

The Sunnyland Neighborhood is served by three parks that are dispersed throughout the neighborhood so that most houses are a quick walk away from one of them. Broadway Park is just on the edge of the neighborhood and has a playground and large open grass areas for running and playing games. On the other side of the neighborhood there is Sunnyland School with the adjacent Memorial Park. The school has a great playground and Memorial park has open grass and trees. Memorial Park is the starting point of the Railroad trail that runs all the way to Whatcom Falls Park and Lake Whatcom while only crossing a few streets. This is a well-used path by joggers and walkers alike and runs right past Barkley Village and the variety of shopping and dining opportunities that are found there. Then there is the smaller, put conveniently located Sunnyland Park that is set up for younger children with a playground and some space to run.

Sunnyland is close to all the public schools from elementary to high school. Sunnyland Elementary is located a short walk for many of the kids in the neighborhood. Whatcom Middle School is close enough for most of the middle school students to walk to, and Bellingham High School is just down the street.
