On the eastern edge of Bellingham, you will find Lake Whatcom, one of the largest lakes in the Northwest, and situated on the southern edge of Lake Whatcom you will find the Silver Beach Neighborhood. Silver Beach is a beautiful neighborhood with wide variety of homes and condos, many with views of the lake. There are turn-of-the-century homes, full of period craftsman character, beautifully designed and built view homes, amazing up-scale lakeside homes and a variety of lake side and parkside condominiums.
The neighborhood is on the edge of town, so it’s close to downtown conveniences, but is also close to forested areas and natural settings.
Silver Beach has a neighborhood elementary school, several unique parks and numerous walking and biking trails that skirt the area. For those moving to Bellingham, Silver Beach is one of the neighborhoods that are on the top of the list of places to consider.
Silver Beach is fortunate to have two large parks right in the neighborhood. Bloedel Donovan Park is the City’s 20-acre park right on the water. It has swimming, boat ramps, playground, large open areas, softball fields and indoor facilities for group use. In the summer, this is one of the destination parks for swimming and boating. Whatcom Falls Park is on the edge of the neighborhood and has miles of walking trails. Here you can walk through the forest, along the creek and connect with the railroad trail that takes you to the edge of downtown. Just having these two parks close by is one reason why this neighborhood is so popular. Silver Beach is also home to one of Bellingham’s most unique, and lesser known parks, Big Rock Garden. Big Rock Garden is a small park, tucked into a forested corner of the neighborhood that is home to over 35 original sculptures. Placed in a setting that allows nature to be a backdrop and to interact with the sculpture, it is a peaceful place to stroll and to contemplate.
Silver Beach has its own small market that is situated in the center of the neighborhood, and just down the hill is two of Bellingham’s most popular markets, Haggen and Trader Joe’s. Haggen is less than a mile from Silver Beach and is the anchor of the Barkley Shopping District. Here you’ll find not just an excellent up-scale grocery store, but also a variety of restaurants, banks, and boutiques all a part of a beautifully designed village.
The Silver Beach is fortunate to have Silver Beach Elementary in the neighborhood within walking distance for many of the students. It’s one of Bellingham’s smaller schools and is connected to many of the neighborhood walking paths. The older kids go to Whatcom Middle School and the High School students go to Squalicum High School.
